1. Reflect on some part of your childhood and the way you used media as part of daily life when you were growing up. What were some of your favorite books, movies, TV shows, music, videogames, or online experiences between the ages of 4 - 7, 8 - 10 or between 11 - 15? Did your peers, parents or family members think and feel about media and technology and how did their views influence you?
I believe I am surrounded by different mediums technology ever since I was born (educational toys, cartoons, electronic toys and etc.). I can't remember what are my favourite books, movies, tv shows, music, video games or online experiences when I was between 4 -10 years old as it was eons ago! Despite that, I do remember back when I was a young teen (I'm now an 'older teen'), my 'favourite tv shows' would be cartoons (that aired every weekend mornings) such as Totally Spies, Ultraman, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teen Titans, Young Justice, Justice League and etc. My favourite 'online experience' would be playing Playstation 2 games and computer games. I do not have a favourite music genre, book and movies back then. Now, I don't really have any 'favourites'. My peers, family and I definitely think and feel about media and technology because all of us including the society have become dependent on them. These elements have become significant in our lives. Media provide us with a wealth of information (gossip, hard news, soft news and etc.) whereas technology is a great amount of help in improving our lives (transportation, digitalisation, internet, electronics, gadgets). My family and peers' views on technology and media are the same as my views so there were not much 'influence' going on between us.
2. Reflecting back on your childhood use of media and technology, what lessons did you learn from the media messages that were part of your growing up years?
One of the lessons that I learned from media messages that were part of my growing up years was that anything that happens in fictional tv shows or movies is fictional/fake. From that, I learned from an early age to differentiate between real life and fiction/virtual. For example, I like playing the Grand Theft Auto games but I do not practiced car-hijacking in real life (unless I want to land my butt in jail). Besides that, I also learned not too practice/follow/copy the 'on-screen happenings'. Other than that, media messages do not affect me much because I'm a sensible/rational/practical girl from young. I know what is right and what is wrong and media messages do not influence my personal beliefs nor my perceptions.
